Canada’s liberals have announced that Canada’s new prime minister, former central banker and Bitcoin critic Mark Carney is planning to fight the recently introduced tariffs.
Carney won the landslide vote on March 9th and chose an alternative to Justin Trudeau, who had held the position for over seven years.
Carney served as the Bank of Canada governor between 2008 and 2013, then crossed the Atlantic and served as the Bank of England governor for the next seven years. He told local media on March 1 that he had begun the process of waiving his British and Ireland citizenship.

He has been opposed to Bitcoin (BTC) since at least March 2, 2018, when he said that the fixed supply cap of Bitcoin would result in “serious flaws.”
“If someone who doesn’t remember the past is accused of repeating it, “Reproducing the virtual global gold standard would be a criminal act of financial amnesia.”
“The fixed supply of Bitcoin has given global speculative enthusiasts that have driven a surge in new cryptocurrencies,” Carney said in a speech on the future of money while serving as governor at England’s top bank.
Kearney also said Bitcoin and cryptocurrency have proven to be “valuable short-term stores.”
“If you put out a £1,000 student loan in Bitcoin last December to pay for your Stirling living expenses next year, you’ll be cutting around £500 now. If you did the same in September last year, you’ll be moving £2,000 ahead. That’s pretty much a lottery.”
In the same paper, Carney defended central banks’ digital currencies and said it suggests that central banks could “help fight terrorism and economic crime” while expanding bank access to more individuals and businesses.
However, Kearney was also an executive at payment processor company Stripe from February 2021 to January 2025. Meanwhile, Stripe implemented a variety of crypto payment solutions between 2022 and 2024.
Carney’s negative views on Bitcoin and Crypto appear to be stronger than those of Trudeau, who once described opposition leader Pierre Poliever’s procryption platform as “reckless.”
“Telling people that investing in cryptocurrency allows them to opt out of inflation is not a responsible leadership,” Trudeau said in September 2022.
Carney is set to fight back on tariffs with Trump
In his victory speech on March 9, Carney called on President Donald Trump to “attack Canadian families” and to weaken Canada’s economy through tariffs.
“Donald Trump has put unfair tariffs on how we build, sell, and make a living,” Carney said.

The Canadian government is “correctly retaliating” with tariffs, and Carney said it will remain so far “the Americans show respect for us.”
